Lace Shawl Design

$90

with Heddi Craft

Calendar Aug 18, 2018 at 1 pm, runs for 3 weeks

In this three session class, knitters will design and begin to knit a top down triangular lace shawl.

In the first session, we’ll start by exploring lace stitches in stitch dictionaries and learn how to translate written directions to charts. We’ll look at how to successfully combine stitches.   As homework, students will swatch selected stitch patterns and select a yarn for their design.

In the second class, students will bring completed swatches of chosen stitch patterns to class and we will learn how to add them to a basic template for a top down shawl. We’ll talk about how to deal with edge stitches to make a graceful garment and other ways to adjust the garment to fit the desired patterns. As homework, students will swatch their refined pattern and/or begin knitting their shawl.

In the final class of the series, we’ll discuss options for shawl edgings.  We’ll troubleshoot problems in design and briefly discuss submitting patterns for publication.

Prerequisite skills: should be familiar with knit and purl stitches as well as common increases and decreases

Materials Needed:

  • Fingering or lace weight yarn in desired blend and color
  • Set of circular needles of various sizes, from the suggested sizes on the yarn band to 2-3 sizes larger
  • Basic knitting supplies
  • Pencil with eraser
  • Yellow and red colored pencils (preferably erasable-- available at Palace)
  • At least one stitch dictionary (available at the library or online)
  • Graph paper (5 squares to the inch for the first class, participants may want other sizes for later classes)

Learn to Knit Mitts

$40

with Heddi Craft

Calendar Aug 18, 2018 at 10 am, runs for 1 week

In this class we'll learn to knit a pair of mitts with a gusset thumb and a bit of colorwork.  You'll be able to choose between a plain stripe, a slipped stitch pattern, and a simple Fair Isle pattern.  Knit your mitts using double pointed needles or a single long circular and the magic loop technique, whichever you are the most comfortable using.

Once you've knit a pair of mitts, you have all the skills you need to work a simple top down raglan sweater.  Join this class and build your skills!

Materials needed:

Worsted weight yarn in two colors (the sample mitts use various colors of Malabrigo Rios)

US 7 (4.5 mm)  double pointed needles or circular needle between 32" and 40" (81-121 cm)

Stitch markers

Basic knitting supplies (tapestry needle, scissors, etc.)

THIS CLASS HAS HOMEWORK!  Please complete the following:

Knit a gauge swatch in stockinette stitch. Cast on about 15 stitches with the recommended needles and knit about 18 rows.  Your gauge should be 10 sts x 14 rows = 2” (5 cm) in stockinette stitch, blocked.  If you have too few stitches, try a SMALLER needle.  If you have too many stitches, try a LARGER needle.  Gauge is critical to get the desired size, but if you wish to knit the mitts and you are not concerned with the finished size, you may omit this step.

Measure the circumference of your palm below the fingers but above the thumb.  If you palm is between 6" and 7" (15-18 cm), cast on 28 sts.  If you palm is between 7" and 8" (18-20 cm), cast on 32 sts.  If you palm is between 8" and 9" (20-23 cm), cast on 36 sts.  Join to work in the round.

Work a knit two purl two ribbing for 14 rounds and bring the ribbing to class on the needles ready for the next step.

Having trouble with the homework?  Join us for Troubleshooting Tuesdays and we'll help you out or contact Heddi at heddicraftdesigns@thecraftstudio.com.
